Final exam week is without a doubt the most stressful week of the quarter. There are projects to finish, tests to study for and large portions of your grade are at stake that could change the grade you’ve worked to keep up all quarter long. While it isn’t impossible to get through finals with good grades and impressive projects, the stress that comes along with all your hard work can take its toll. Luckily, campus recreation is thinking about the students in their time of need

Every quarter on the Monday of exam week, Ping hosts the exam stress-reliever special event where, for two hours, everything is devoted to calming you, the hard working student, down. The best part? It’s completely free.

This upcoming Monday, November 16, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., you will have the chance to get some much needed rest and relaxation. They provide free snacks, like cookies and a free pasta dinner, and free pampering and games. There is a cookie decorating contest and board games to keep you entertained.

The best part and the one that creates the longest lines, however, are the free massages performed by licensed massage therapists. The same masseuses that perform stress-relievers for a fee at Ping donate their healing hands for the stress-reliever, and, believe me, it’s worth waiting in line for these massages. If you want to get the best pampering, get there a little early.

This event is bound to help you keep your sanity during final exams which, I think we can all agree, can drive some people a little crazy. Be sure to address your stress and come to Ping for the free TLC.

As I gathered my purse and keys to leave my apartment and head to the weekly craft session, Marti & Stewie, held at Baker Student Center, my room mate stopped me to ask where I was going. When I told her, she gave me a confused look. “Didn’t you get the e-mail?” she said. “They closed that down.”

My heart was broken! Every Thursday at 9 p.m., Marti & Stewie, the once-popular arts and crafts session held in the 1954 lounge and coordinated by the Department of Residence Life, was a safe-haven for those looking for something to do other than spending cash on booze uptown. It was fun, engaging and, best of all, free! All of the materials were provided and anyone could attend. It made you feel like a kid all over again.

As wonderful as it was, Marti & Stewie was canceled due to budget cuts, despite the good it was doing for the community. As a part of the weekly featured Baker Nights, which had attracted 750-1,000 of the 20,000 students on campus each week, Marti & Stewie offered good, clean fun for those around campus, something that is always in constant need at Ohio University.

Jennifer Troutman, one of the coordinators, sent out an e-mail to those on their mailing list, which was once used as a platform to tell subscribers what craft would be featured that week, encouraging Marti & Stewie lovers to voice their concern over the loss of the program. In her latest e-mail, sent September 17, she sent the latest, not-too-thrilling update:

“The program is still on hold, but we are looking into ways to fund the program. Further information will come. Again, thank you for your interest and concern. “

She also encouraged supporters to e-mail the Division of Student Affairs, including opinions and pictures of crafts made at the event, in order to garner more favor over bringing the program back. Also, she asked that further questions and concerns be directed to Cathy Murphy, resident coordinator.

In my times at Marti & Stewie, I have created clay magnets, friendship bracelets, picture frames, treasure boxes, memo boards and many other things that I still use to decorate my room or I was able to give them as gifts. It was a thrill to spend a time with my friends, laughing and enjoying each other’s company while I could use my hands to create something sparked by the imagination of the coordinators of the program. I find it a shame to see it gone.
