Tuesdays are exactly the most exciting of days, but it can be a fun and delicious one if you know where to go. If you’re bored and hungry on that day before “hump” day, a good idea might be to try the Vegan Cooking Workshop, held every week at 7 p.m. at University Campus Ministry on College Street. Whether you a vegetarian, vegan or a carnivorous creature, everyone can attend and lend a hand in preparing a healthy and delicious meal for the whole group.

This week marked the first meeting of the Vegan Cooking Workshop of the year. It is free of charge and open to anyone and everyone. Some meetings can have as many as 50 people, which only make them more fun. Hosted by Conscious Ohio, the Workshop is a positive influence on the heart and health of the students and community members and is strongly supported by the University.

With every visit to the UCM on Tuesday nights, I have had nothing but positive experiences. There is so much to reap from this weekly event. First of all, you get to meet a lot of new people, most of whom aren’t even vegetarian, let alone vegan, and the idea of veganism isn’t even the point of the workshop. No one pushes any issues or values on anyone; it’s all people who want to socialize, cook and create a meal that everyone can enjoy.

The best part, to me, is doing the cooking. Everyone lends a helping hand, whether it is cutting up the veggies, working the oven or cleaning the dishes after the meal is over, and it really creates a soothing sense of camaraderie. Cooking is also a wonderful way to de-stress and wind down from your day of classes, work or whatever else might be troubling you. When you enter the UCM, you leave those worries behind and focus on feeding those around you.

For most people, however, the best part is eating. In the times I have gone to Vegan Cooking, I have eaten surprisingly delicious tofu (which, before, I never would have touched), soups, salads with homemade dressings, smoothies, doughnuts and cinnamon rolls. All of them are delicious and fun to make.

The Workshop is valuable in many ways; since you were the one making the food, you know the techniques and ingredients for that day’s dish. Write it down, take it home and keep the good food coming as often as you’d like. You have an opportunity to meet new people, experience foods you may have never tried before and harness your energy on something constructive–food for your stomach!
